How Late in the Spring Can You Ski in Japan?

When people think of skiing in Japan, they imagine the freezing, deep powder months of January (“Japanuary”) and February. But what if your schedule only allows for a trip during the cherry blossom season?

Can you still ski in Japan in April and May? Absolutely. In fact, spring skiing in Japan is entirely underrated. The weather is sunny, the lift tickets are heavily discounted, and you can literally ski in the morning and view cherry blossoms in the afternoon.

Here is the ultimate guide to the 2026 spring ski season in Japan.

The Vibe: What is Spring Snow Like?

By mid-March, the famous dry “Japow” is usually gone. The temperatures rise above freezing during the day, creating what locals call “corn snow.”

In the morning, the groomed runs are fast and firm. By 11:00 AM, the top layer melts down to the consistency of granular sugar, making for incredibly fun, forgiving, surfy conditions. You’ll see people skiing in t-shirts, sunglasses instead of goggles, and drinking cold beers on outdoor patios.

Where to Ski in Late March and April

Most mainstream resorts in Japan keep pushing lifts until the first week of May (Golden Week).

  • Niseko United (Hokkaido): The higher you go, the longer the snow lasts. While the powder is gone, Niseko Grand Hirafu usually operates until early May. The upper mountain sidecountry is fantastic for slushy spring laps.
  • Hakuba Valley (Nagano): Happo-one and Goryu are known for strong spring operations. Because the Japanese Alps are very steep, you get long, exciting sunny groomer laps well into late April.
  • Kagura (Niigata): Kagura sits remarkably high. While nearby resorts in Yuzawa close in March, Kagura typically keeps spinning lifts until the end of May.

The Ultimate Late Season: Gassan

If you are a true die-hard who wants to ski in summer, there is only one destination: Gassan Ski Resort (Yamagata Prefecture).

Gassan is completely unique. It receives too much snow in the winter—often over 20+ meters—making it too dangerous to operate. They actually completely bury the lifts.

Gassan only OPENS in April and stays open until July. It is mostly a backcountry destination equipped with ancient t-bars, but it attracts hardcore spring touring enthusiasts from all over the world.

Spring Skiing Pro-Tips

  1. Beware of the Wax: Spring snow is notoriously slow and sticky because it holds a lot of dirt and pollen. Do not ride your mid-winter wax; ask your rental shop to apply a high-temperature “Spring Wax.”
  2. Sunscreen is non-negotiable: The UV index at altitude in April is brutal, and the snow reflects 80% of it right under your chin. Reapply factor 50 every two hours.
  3. Pace Yourself: Slushy snow requires much more leg effort to turn in compared to light powder or hardpack. Your thighs will burn faster.
